Hortus Botanicus Leiden


The Hortus Botanicus Leiden is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in the world. It is located in the southwestern city’s historic center, between the building and the Academy of Leiden Observatory.

In 1587 Leiden University, Leiden academicus Mayor Young asked for permission to build the back of the building Hortus Academy, for the benefit of medical students. Permission granted in 1590, and as a resident raised the famous botanist Carolus Clusius (1526-1609), who arrived in Leiden in 1593. Clusius knowledge “, the reputation and international contacts enabled him to establish a large collection of plants. Clusius also urged the Dutch East India Company (VOC) on plants and (dried) to collect samples of plants. The original park was Clusius established small (about 35 to 40 meters) but contains more than 1000 different plants.

Tropical Collection (from India) and sub-tropical (from Cape Colony) successors continued plant Clusius’. Especially Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738, the population of 1709-1730), contributed significantly to the fame of the Hortus with efforts to open new plants and to collect samples, and by publications such as catalogs plants can be found in the Hortus.

Another important contribution to the collection of Philipp Franz von Siebold made by a German doctor who worked in Deshima (Japan) by the VOC from 1823 until his dismissal by the Japanese in 1829. During this time he collected a quantity of dried and living plants from all over Japan (and also animals, ethnographic objects, maps, etc.), and send it to suffering.

Glass House first appeared in the Hortus in the second half of the 17th Century, oranges monumental 1740-1744 built. From the original plan Hortus extended to 1817. In 1857, partly used to build the new observatory at Leiden.

The Hortus is closing at 4 p.m. during the months of December and January
