Dam Square
Dam Square is located in the historic center of Amsterdam, approximately 750 meters south of the main transportation hub, Centraal Station. This is roughly rectangular, extending about 200 meters from east to west and about 100 m from north to south. It combines the streets Damrak and Rokin, which run along the journey from Centraal Station Amstel native to Muntplein (Mint Square) and Munt. Dam also marks the end point of a good trip-including Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat and Damstraat. Not far beyond the northeast corner is the main red light district, de Wallen go.
At the western end of the square is the neoclassical Royal Palace, which serves as City Hall from 1655 until the transition to a royal residence in 1808. In addition, the 15th Century Gothic Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. National Monument, a white stone pillar by JJP Oud designed and established in 1956 to commemorate the victims of World War II, dominates the opposite side of the square. Also in view of a square is the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky and the upscale department store De Bijenkorf. Various attractions Dam has changed in tourist areas. Town square filled with pigeons, popular for bird feeding.
Dam takes its name from its original function: a dam on the Amstel, also the name of the city. Built around 1270, the dam is the first link between the settlements on the river side.
When the dam was built in stages is wide enough for a town square, which remains the core of the city developed around it. Dam in its current form was created from two original boxes: the actual dam, called Middeldam Plaetse and place in the west. A huge fish market which has emerged, where the ship anchored in the dam to load and unload goods. This area became the center of not only commercial activities but also from government, as the Amsterdam City Hall site.
As a market, heavy Dam House, which can be seen in some old paintings. This was in 1808 on the orders of Louis Bonaparte destroyed the Royal Palace residence in a new convert, complained that his view was blocked.
